This the1878 patent granted to inventor Charles Sholes, for the typewriter.

Actually, it's a patent for an *improvement* for the typewriter.
They had been around before, and in fact Scholes had patents granted for previous versions, but this one is notable for the QWERTY keyboard that we all know and love.

Designed by Sholes, the letters were laid out like that after they had problems with jams in earlier version with letters being pressed too quickly too close together. 
So, research was done to show the usage of letters, and QWERTY layout was found to reduce the jams, as letters commonly used together were kept apart.

It became so established once typewriters took off, that it never changed to anything else, so we still see it in use today.

This a great canvas print to hang on the wall for writers of any ilk, and makes a great gift to *give* to writers, birthdays, Christmas etc. 

The original applications are in black and white, so I've made this available in white and also 2 other colours, which I've called Blueprint Blue & Biscuit Brown.
